What is corrugated cardboard?
Surface paper, inner paper, and a wavy core paper (corrugated core) are bonded together to create corrugated cardboard, a composite cardboard. The "corrugations"—a wavy shape in the center—are its main characteristic.

What are the main characteristics for corrugated cardboard?
1. Sturdy and lightweight: The cardboard can handle more pressure with less material because the wavy core paper creates a continuous arch shape that disperses the stress.
2. Excellent cushioning performance: The corrugated arch structure is a perfect material for shipping boxes because it can efficiently absorb shock and vibration.

What are the structures for corrugated cardboard?
1. Single-sided corrugated: one layer of moderately soft surface paper and one layer of corrugated core paper, frequently used as a cushioning pad.
2. Double sided corrugated: one layer of corrugated core paper+face paper+inner paper, most kind of corrugated cardboard boxes are this type.
3. Double corrugated: Two layers of corrugated core+three layers of paper surface, has higher strength, usually used for heavy-duty packaging.
4. Three layer corrugated: Three layer corrugated core+four layer surface paper, with extremely high strength, used to replace wooden boxes for packaging large heavy goods.
What is the production process for corrugated cardboard?
The production of corrugated cardboard is a continuous and efficient automatic process, the main purpose is bond the flat paper(include the surface paper, inner paper and corrugated core paper) to form a sturdy multi-layer structure.
The whole process can separate below several steps:
1. Installation raw paper and preheating
At the beginning of production, several big rolls of raw paper are installed on the paper return rack, then, these papers will be preheated by heating rollers, this process can removes excess moisture, and also will make the papers softer, in order to form a corrugated shapes and ensuring better adhesion of the glue.
2. Pressing and initial adhesion: shaping the core structure
This is the most important step in production. The corrugated core paper will be put into a single facer machine and pressed into a wavy shape between two huge heated corrugated rollers, then, the glue will be applied to the peaks of the formed corrugated paper, and quickly bonded to the preheated inner paper to form a "single facer corrugated cardboard".
3. Bonding and drying: forming a solid whole structure
The stacked multi-layer cardboard will enter the double-sided machine. Here, the heating plate will apply high temperature to quickly gelatinize and solidify the glue, while the pressure roller above will apply uniform pressure to ensure that each layer is firmly adhered together, forming a flat and hard corrugated cardboard.
4. Precision machining and output for stacking, vertical cutting, and horizontal cutting
A long, wide continuous piece of cardboard that needs to be cut into conventional sizes just came out of the double facer machine.
Firstly, the longitudinal indentation machine will cut off the burrs along the direction of the cardboard's movement and press out the longitudinal indentation that will be used for folding in the future. Then, the cross cutting knife will cut the cardboard horizontally according to the preset length. Finally, the finished cardboard will sent to the stacking machine, the machine will tidy up all cardboard by quaking, this will make it easier for subsequent handling and boxing.
What machines will be used in the production process for corrugated cardboard?
The required machines for the whole process is mainly include following:
Wet part: Press and bond the base paper into shape
Raw paper holder and paper feeder machine: used to place and clamp raw paper rolls, and automatically splice new and old paper rolls during high-speed production to ensure continuous operation for the whole production line.
Single facer corrugated machine: This is the most important equipment for the production line. It compresses the core paper into wavy corrugation and then bonds them with the inner paper to make single facer corrugated cardboard.
Drying part: Accurately cut and stack large cardboard sheets
Longitudinal cutting and creasing machine: in charge of cutting and creasing cardboard longitudinally in order to prepare it for later carton construction. The position of the knife and indentation wheel can be quickly and automatically adjusted using modern equipment.
Cross cutting machine: Precisely cut the cardboard horizontally in accordance with the predetermined length. Computer-controlled cross-cutting machines with excellent cutting accuracy and quick speed are typically found on high-speed manufacturing lines.
Stacking machine: Automatically collect, count, and stack the cut corrugated cardboard neatly according to the setting quantity, make it easy to transport to the next process.
