Understand the manufacturing process of corrugated cardboard box manufacturing industry

The manufacturing of corrugated cardboard boxes is a highly automated and continuous industrial process, with the core being the conversion of flat raw paper into wavy structures (corrugated) with cushioning and protective functions, and then turning them into cardboard boxes. The entire process can be roughly divided into the following core steps:

Step 1: Raw Material Preparation - Raw Paper
The main raw material for corrugated cardboard boxes is corrugated paper, which is divided into three types:
Box board paper: used for the outer and inner layers of cardboard boxes, with good quality, high smoothness, and easy printing.
Corrugated core paper: used to make wavy "corrugations" in the middle, mainly requiring elasticity, compressive strength, and toughness.
Medium paper: In some high-strength cardboard (such as double corrugated), it is used as a barrier between two layers of corrugated core paper.
These raw papers are transported to the factory in the form of large rolls and directly onto the production line.

Step 2: Core Manufacturing Process - Corrugated Paperboard Production Line
This is the heart of the entire manufacturing process, a continuous automated production line. The process is as follows:
1. Raw paper holder and preheating
Multiple rolls of paper are placed on a large bracket.
The raw paper enters the preheating wheel through the guide roller for preheating, evaporating some of the moisture and making the paper more flexible, facilitating subsequent forming and bonding.
2. Single sided machine - the core of forming corrugations
This is the most crucial step. The corrugated core paper passes between two huge corrugated rollers with meshing teeth on top and bottom.
Under high temperature (usually 160 ° C-180 ° C) and high pressure, flat core paper is pressed into continuous, wavy corrugations.
At the same time, the glue roller will apply starch adhesive on the top of the corrugated surface.
Subsequently, a cardboard (face paper) is immediately bonded to the corrugated core paper coated with glue, forming a single-sided corrugated cardboard.
3. Double sided machine (bridge section) and bonding
Single sided corrugated cardboard is transported through a long conveyor belt (known as a "bridge") to naturally evaporate some of its moisture and preliminarily shape.
If three-layer (single corrugated) cardboard needs to be manufactured, another cardboard (inner paper) will be guided over and bonded to the corrugated surface of the single-sided corrugated cardboard at the double-sided machine.
If it is necessary to manufacture five layer (double corrugated) or seven layer (triple corrugated) cardboard, more single-sided corrugated cardboard and medium paper will be stacked at this stage, and multiple adhesive and heating plates will be used to firmly bond them into multi-layer corrugated cardboard under high temperature and high pressure.
4. Drying and cooling
After forming, the multi-layer corrugated cardboard enters the drying part (hot plate) of the production line and further solidifies the adhesive through high temperature.
Subsequently, the cardboard enters the cooling section and is cooled and stabilized in shape and strength by a huge fan. Cooling is crucial to prevent cardboard deformation.

Step 3: Subsequent Processing - From Cardboard to Carton
The product coming out of the production line is a large continuous corrugated cardboard that needs to be cut and processed according to customer orders.
1. Vertical and horizontal cutting
Longitudinal cutting and creasing machine: Firstly, continuous cardboard is cut longitudinally and multiple creased using equipment with circular knives and creasing wheels to determine the width and crease position of the cardboard box.
Computerized cross cutting machine: Then, according to the preset order length, the high-speed rotating blade accurately cuts the cardboard horizontally, forming independent cardboard blanks.
2. Printing and slotting die cutting
This is a key step in endowing cardboard boxes with appearance and functionality, depending on the complexity of the equipment:
Printing slotting and die-cutting machine (most commonly used):
Printing: Use flexographic printing (water-based ink) to print the company logo, identification, transportation information, etc. on cardboard blanks. It can be printed in monochrome or multi-color.
Slotting: Use a slotting knife to cut the seam of the rocking cover (upper and lower covers) on the cardboard.
Line pressing: Further strengthen the crease line to ensure that the cardboard box can be bent neatly.
Die cutting: If the cardboard box is not a standard regular box type (such as with handle holes, irregular structures, etc.), a specialized die cutting blade will be used to punch the required shape in one go, like "stamping".
Flatbed die-cutting machine: For very complex or small batches of irregular cardboard boxes, a separate die-cutting machine will be used for processing.
3. Join into a box
The final step is to connect the flat cardboard blanks into a three-dimensional cardboard box. There are mainly three ways:
Nail box: using wire nails for fast speed, high strength, and low cost.
Adhesive box: Using adhesive to bond seams, the appearance is neater, seamless and nail free, suitable for packaging with high-quality printing.
Adhesive tape bonding: using high-strength adhesive tape to bond, making it convenient for users to unpack and reuse.

Step 4: Packaging and Shipping
The completed cardboard boxes will be automatically counted, stacked, and tied with strapping.
Finally, place the tray and secure it with wrapping film, waiting for shipment to the customer.

Summary and Key Points
Core principle: Using corrugated structures (similar to arch bridges) to convert flat paper into lightweight, high-strength materials.
Production features: Highly continuous and automated, one production line can produce several meters of cardboard per second.
Quality control: Throughout the entire process, the edge compression strength, burst resistance, and puncture strength of the cardboard will be continuously tested to ensure that the finished product meets the standards.
